Dear #DailyFollower,
Introduction
We’re halfway through one more work week in February. I hope this week has been productive.
We continue our journey through Proverbs today with an introduction to the person, a lady, as King Solomon describes her, called Wisdom.
Before I proceed, let me quickly recap some thoughts from yesterday’s letter for someone joining this journey today. You can also check out this post to see all the other letters in the series.
Yesterday, it was all about choosing our friends wisely. Solomon says we set ourselves up for an untimely end when we don’t. This a valuable piece of advice that daily followers with a promise of a long good life must listen to (hear and obey).
Today, we continue with an introduction to Lady Wisdom, the most central figure in this book and a valuable companion we must have in our journey through life.
Let’s meet Wisdom!
The Text
Proverbs 1:20, EXB
20 Wisdom [the personification of God’s wisdom; 8:1–36; 9:1–6] ·is like a woman shouting [shouts] in the street; she ·raises her voice [yells out] in the city squares [the hub for business, government, and social interaction].
Some Thoughts
Wisdom speaks. I don’t know about Solomon’s depiction of Wisdom as a lady, but I agree that Wisdom speaks. In fact, according to King Solomon, she shouts! Yelling at the top of her voice in the busy city squares. Wisdom speaks.
The voice we hear in our head that provides some perspective or instructs us on how to approach situations. Could that be the voice of Wisdom? The voice we hear in the noisy scenes of a busy street or office floor is one that many of us have come to describe as “something“, with some people calling it intuition.
I’m sure you’ve heard at least one person say, “Something told me not to go there.“ or “Something told me to do that.“ These things we hear are the speakings of Wisdom, a living and present part of human existence before Solomon existed, and will remain present even long after we’re gone. It is the eternal nature of Wisdom.
One Thought To Ponder
Why is Wisdom shouting, raising her voice? Is it possible that it is because many of us have developed a habit of consistently ignoring ‘her’?
If we’re honest with ourselves, we’d admit to ignoring the voice of Wisdom speaking to us. Our “Something told me…“ moments where we took a different path from the one the voice in our heads suggested and saw things not turn out as well as we hoped.
Please spend some time today to reflect on why we find it easy to ignore the promptings of Wisdom and give her no choice but to yell out at us.
Conclusion
Wisdom spoke before and during Solomon’s days; Wisdom spoke long after Solomon and continues to speak today.
More accurately, Wisdom has been yelling at humanity to get us to choose the good life our Creator made available to us.
Yet, sadly, not as many as should are listening to the speaking voice of Wisdom. I hope you’ll be one of the few paying a little more attention to listening to the words of Lady Wisdom.
Tomorrow, we’d start to explore some of the things Lady Wisdom has to say.
Until then, I'd like you to listen to all Wisdom says and commit to following her advice. You’ll always be better off doing so.
Yours faithfully,
John, a #DailyFollower.
