Dear #DailyFollower,
Introduction
The seconds are ticking by, and so is February in the race to the end. It’s the 4th day already!
I hope your week has started on a great note.
We continue our journey through Proverbs today with thoughts about the likely outcomes to expect when anyone doesn’t choose their company wisely.
Before I proceed, let me quickly recap some thoughts from yesterday’s letter for someone joining this journey today. You can also check out this post to see all the other letters in the series.
The key wisdom we learned from King Solomon’s inspired words was not to follow or go along with peers who do not bring out our best virtues and to avoid doing what they do.
Simple enough! But challenging to execute consistently in a world constantly calling us to ‘Keep up with the Joneses’. I shared a thought about one peer who we must allow to influence us because, in Him, we have the ability we need to execute King Solomon’s wise counsel consistently. You want to check out the letter to know who this peer is.
Now you’re caught up! Let’s dive into King Solomon's next piece of wisdom for us.
The Text
Proverbs 1:17-19, NLT
17 If a bird sees a trap being set, it knows to stay away.
18 But these people set an ambush for themselves; they are trying to get themselves killed.
19 Such is the fate of all who are greedy for money; it robs them of life.
Some Thoughts
Solomon’s advice for today continues the theme of staying away from wrong peers; he says as a bird knows enough to stay far away from a trap, the daily follower of Jesus must run far away from peers that lead them down unpleasant paths.
In verses 18 and 19, he explains why we must run far away from the wicked in verses 18 and 19; the traps they set in the hope of bringing a single bag of loot will rob them of life.
The daily follower stays far away from anyone who seeks to deprive them of God’s promise of a good life. One good way to avoid or keep away bad company is to choose our company wisely.
One Question To Ponder
Are my current companions joint heirs with Christ?
Remember, the peers we want to influence us are the ones who are already peers with Christ because their influence will not rob us of life; instead, it will keep us on track to enjoy our promised good life in abundant measures.
Conclusion
It’s a measure of wisdom when we choose companions who support our quest for the good life; these companions are good company, and their influence preserves our lives rather than contributes to taking us out of life.
Our choice of company plays a vital role in whether we stay long enough in life’s games to pursue our promise of the good life.
It’s down to our choice. Do you see why God said in Joshua 1:8 that making our ways prosperous and having good success lies in our hands? We get to this promise through our choices, and choosing the company we keep is one of the most crucial ones we will make in the different seasons of our lives.
We must choose wisely.
Until we meet again tomorrow, meditate on your choice of companions so far and ask God to help you stay connected to only those who keep you on track to access His promise of the good life.
Yours faithfully,
John, a #DailyFollower.
